The sun is up earlier, the air is warmer, and farmers markets are popping up around every corner. We love getting fresh produce and homemade jams and soaps from our local farmers market, but the first time can be daunting! Check out our handy guide to help you navigate your local farmers market this summer:

DO:

Shop the “in season” produce.

Do a little research to see which fruits and veggies are going to be the biggest and the most flavorful for the season that you’re in.

Remember, farmers markets have local produce, so even though your local grocery store might have strawberries year-round, they’ll be best at the farmers market in early Summer.

DON’T:

Forget to B.Y.O.B, Bring Your Own Bag!

While some farmers markets might have plastic bags available, it’s best to bring your own reusable bag.

If you want to step it up a notch, bring a grocery basket to keep your fruits from getting squished!

DO:

Arrive early.

For first dibs on all the best fruits and veggies be sure to arrive early in the day and visit all the stalls for the biggest selection.

DON’T:

Pass up on an unfamiliar food.

What’s that spiky, brightly colored fruit? It could be your new favorite!

Trying out new foods at a farmers market is easy because you can buy only one or two. Sometimes the vendors will even let you sample it before buying them.

DO:

Check out the vendors selling products other than produce.

A lot of farmers markets also have stalls with homemade jams, soaps, and baked goods.

Make sure to stop and pick up some goat milk soap for your home or a chocolate-y treat for your little ones!

DO:

Come back often!

Since the seasonal produce changes frequently, be sure to visit your local farmers market often.

Visiting often also means you’ll have the freshest fruits and veggies in your kitchen!
